It starts in Sendai with a bright and joyous day. The righteous heir of the Family of Shadows had just been born, and celebrations were in order soon after. The infant, promptly given the name Sunless Marioch to honour the true nature of the shadows he was made to inherit. Immediately, preparations were made to plan out the early stages of his life as once again, another blessing had happened the same day. Kyofu Yukina, the lone child of the Family of Sunders had been born. They were also closely allied with the Shadow Family, so the two clans agreed to raise the two heirs together to allow them to help each other to grow and improve. The early years of their lives were simple and plain, as you would expect from any newborn infant. Once they had neared the age for them to start going to highschool, the training regimen had begun. Everyday was a gruelling task, continuous and repetitive training for the two to be rightfully powerful enough to be called s da heir. Kyofu had been a more emotionally driven person than Sunless, so naturally, this would begin affecting him mentally. More than anyone could have imagined. On a normal week, they would be in their local highschool, chatting and idling about as friends would do. “Don’t you think Ms. Katie has been far too lenient?” Sunless would ask, being judgemental of their homeroom teacher’s leniency towards the other irresponsible students’ incomplete duties. “I suppose… but isn’t it okay? It gives them a chance to learn!” Kyofu would argue, crossing his arms defiantly as he continued on bickering with his friend. “You’re just saying that because you’re one of them, Kyo-kyo.” Sunless responded with a cheeky nickname he’d been teasing him with for a while now. “Shut up, man! I’m smarter than you, y’know?!” Kyofu said as his face contorted into that of annoyance. The calm atmosphere is soon broken by the sudden ear-deafening sounds of a flash grenade, then followed by the burst of gun-fire as assassins come in through the window of the building. With Sunless’ quick thinking, they’re able to safely escort themselves out of danger and start making their way back to their homes, running. “W-What the hell was that?!” Kyofu asked, a hint of fear in his voice as he continued sprinting. “I don’t know. Come on, let’s get you to your house first, you’ll be safer there.” Sunless responded with uncertainty in his tone, taking a hold of his hand and making the two run faster by gliding on their shadows and continuing to make their way to the Yukina Family’s household. As the mansion came into view, it was in absolute ruin. The walls and floors were torn to shreds, and it was all set ablaze. The scorching heat had made the two back off for a bit before observing the state of the once-so prestigious house. They could see bodies of the Yukina family, having gun wounds on their corpses. Before Kyofu could even process this, Sunless had already began running towards his own household with Kyofu in hand, worried about his family’s safety and the two of their own. They make their way back safely, falling under the protection of the Shadow Family once again as the assassination begun being reported locally. They started making preparations and began hiding themselves from the world. Day by day, the training regimens grew more intense. Accidents, and tragedies would happen as well as a sister of Sunless’ goes missing. After several months of this repetitive schedule, Kyofu had grown weary and anxious for his own life, deciding to go and talk to Sunless with it as he entered his room. “Hey… Sunless? Do you… have a moment to spare?” Kyofu asked, peeking through the door shyly as he knew Sunless was still recovering from the loss of his sister. “Kyofu… alright, come in.” Sunless responded, letting the door swing open as he continued laying in bed dejectedly, having finished their training for the day. “I wanted to uhm… talk about something. This… whole thing we’re doing, is it… really necessary? I’ve begun even having hallucinations from how tired I get…” Kyofu stated, opening up to his friend about his troubles with the regiment they’ve been doing for oh so long. “What? It helps us, Kyo. Why do you feel the need to complain?” Sunless replies in a nonchalant tone as he sat up, looking at him. “Listen, I ju-” “Just what, Kyofu? You’ve been driving me insane just by your rambling like this alone.” Sunless cut him off, letting out some pent-up anger in the moment because of his loss. “Wh-What do you mean? I’ve just been trying to ask if we could adj-” “Adjust the schedule, yes, I get it. I’ve been trying to ask my dad. What part about REJECTION do you not get, Kyofu?!” Sunless shouted, getting lost in the heat of the moment. “Come on, just c-” “Just leave my room. I’m in no mood to listen to your ramblings.” Sunless remarked, before lifting him out with his shadow and slamming the door. Kyofu was left there, having taken a little offense but deciding not to keep it to heart because they only had each other as friends, after all. He’d start venting out to Sunless less, often resorting to staring at the ceiling and spending the entire night not resting. But despite the precautions the Marioch Family had taken, assassins were still able to infiltrate the mansion multiple times and threaten Kyofu’s life. This repetitive cycle continually ate away at his mental fortitude, leaving him in a continuously anxious and wary state, flinching and reacting to every little thing. Sunless simply thought it was nothing to worry about as he had not been telling him anything. A single unfortunate day. Kyofu’s hallucinations had finally won, making him snap and react to one of them out of instinct, and mortally wound one of the Marioch family members. The small-scale conflict eventually turned into all of them being against Kyofu, with Sunless being absent having went to run the orders the heir usually does. Sunset. Sunless would start returning and making his way home, carrying some gifts for his family and Kyofu. “Hmm… I think he’d like some new knives for the kitchen… and my sisters would appreciate the hair ties I got.” He thought to himself, before having the mansion come into view. It was a sight too familiar. Thinking the worst, he drops the bags he was holding and rushes into the burning building, into the main area. There stood Kyofu across from him in the room, looking scared out of his mind as he took notice of Sunless. The two friends were at odds, Sunless doesn’t know what happened, and Kyofu was not in the right mental capacity to explain either. In a fit of rage, Sunless initiated the first move. He blasted Kyofu with a block of darkness, and the fight ensued. Chaos erupting between the two friends as they fight for their lives. They gave it all they had, despite this, they both still felt a tinge of sympathy for each other. They knew one was not going to make it out alive. Blood began to drip down from Sunless’ dark blade, soaking Kyofu’s haori as he took a step back and looked into his friend’s eyes, the life fading from his own as his body collapsed into his arms. Sunless sat there among the chaos, the body of his only friend in his hand and his entire household in disarray. He could only take his grimoire and his friend’s hair-tie in panic. He began to make his way through the snowy forest leading away from Sendai. Months pass for him, dredging through the wilderness alone. But surviving due to the training he’s received, no time to contemplate what he’s done as he fights for his life every single day. Eventually, he stumbles upon Minamiyama with clothing he’s stolen from a clothing store in another area. With word spreading around of a college for Evokers, he decides to enroll to start anew and to forgive himself of his own sins. Meanwhile for Kyofu, his lifeless body laid in the carnage. Burning the left side of his face away as it exposes the flesh underneath. All the chaos and negative energy attracted an extremely dangerous Class 1 Demon, Shi-Akui, to the area. Finding some use of Kyofu’s lifeless body, he decides to inhabit it and puppeteer the corpse, planning to use his grimoire in more malicious ways against humanity.
